Remote Airport Terminal

PROJECT OVERVIEW
A first-of-its-kind airport terminal pilot program designed to bring passenger check-in and security screening closer to travelers. The project included construction of a one sotry, approximately 7,200 square-foot weatherized modular facility with passenger lounge areas, ticketing and baggage check, TSA screening with X-ray equipment, and supporting operational spaces. Today, passengers can check bags and complete secutiry screening at the remote facility before boarding a secure shuttle directly to the airport.

The Challenge
The project underwent significant changes during construction. Originally planned for off-site modular assembly, the project required a shift to on-site assembly due to unforseen circumstances involving the modular manufacturer. The facility was also initially intended for seasonal use but was later adapted and winterized to support year-round operations. These changes required the team to respond quickly while maintaining progress and coordinating evolving and construction requirements.
Keel's Approach
Keel served as the Resident Engineer, providing full-time, on-site representation throughout construction. With a team member on site every day, Keel monitored construction progress, coordinated among the owner, design team, contractors, and other stakeholders, and worked through field issues and changing project requirements in real time. This consistent presence helped maintain communication and continuity as the project evolved.
Results
Despite significant changes during construction, the facility was successfully completed and is now operational year-round. Passengers can check bags and complete TSA security screening before traveling by secure shuttle directly to the airport, bringing an innovative remote passenger-processing concept into active operation.
